The following list contains suggestions for possible PGY-2 projects during the rotation. Please discuss with the course director beforehand.

 
 

(1) Create curriculum to teach shock or cardiac ultrasound possibly offering the course to residents from other programs.

The requirements: written protocols that clearly delineate the curriculum-specific skill areas to be covered, including the number of machines, models, proctors and the exact resources required to carry out the workshop.

(2) Create a curriculum to teach residents and faculty how to perform thoracic or lung ultrasound, similar to the cardiac project.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

(3) This is an open source intellectual property project which may appeal to the artistic and/or technically savvy resident. The goal is to create a library of short video clips and images (including GIF images) associated with all 12 areas of POCUS scope of practice, originating from original HIPAA compliant source material at SRMC.

(4) Create two (2) Sim-Man cases incorporating the use of POCUS as part of the simulation. Sonosim RF ID tags with various pathologic conditions will be available for the resident to select for the specific cases. Both cases must be thoroughly tested before credit is given.

(5) This project involves the optimization of the current study and QA templates on QPath. As part of the initial QPath rollout, for the sake of time (or lack thereof), St. Vincent’s templates were copied over to St. Rita’s. After one year of use, it is apparent that many areas of these templates are unhelpful. The resident will work with the ultrasound director to come up with best practice elements for both the exam and QA templates, to fit the needs and requirements at SRMC.

Topics and skills include:
Procedural techniques (needle localization, central vs posterior approach)
Anatomical considerations (Basilic vs cephalic veins)
Complications (arterial cannulation, pneumothorax) – how to avoid

(2) This practical project involves the creation of laminated “cheat sheets/cards” to summarize the various aspects of the GE Venue GO ultrasound machines employed at SRMC. After identifying the “pain points” of current POCUS users concerning the GE system, the resident will create a list of pertinent topics to dissect and research. The end product will greatly assist end users to more efficiently and effectively navigate and utilize the Venue GO.
