The following list contains suggestions for possible PGY-2 projects during the ultrasound block. Please discuss with the course director to finalize.
(1) Sim Man POCUS
Create two (2) Sim-man cases incorporating the use of POCUS as part of the simulation scenarios. Sonosim RF ID tags with various preconfigured pathologic conditions are available for the resident to utilize. Both cases must be thoroughly tested before credit is given.
(2) Enhance Ultrasound Website
Further incorporate new educational modules and blogs into the existing ultrasound portion of the resident hub. Possible additions include ultrasound images of the month, composite case scenarios with interesting ultrasound clips. The sky’s the limit!
(3) Create new curriculum or module for cardiac or lung ultrasound
Create a new curriculum to teach either (a) shock or cardiac ultrasound or (b) lung ultrasound to St Rita’s residents, both within and outside the Emergency Medicine program. Written protocols must be created that clearly delineate the learning objectives, assessment tools and additional resources.
(4) Open source ultrasound image repository
This project may appeal to the artistic or technically savvy resident. The goal is to collate and create a repository of high yield and anonymized (HIPAA compliant) clinical ultrasound images or graphics (GIF) highlighting all 12 areas of ACEP ultrasound applications. The goal is to offer these images to ultrasound educators around the world royalty-free!
(5) Hold 3 ultrasound guided peripheral IV placement workshops with St Rita’s Emergency Department nurses
Continue to offer the newly developed training module for nursing staff which involved the use of an IV phantom made of gelatin, as well as on-site demonstration and performance assessment.
(6) Record a Pod on An Ultrasound Topic
Invite a speaker or panel to a well-planned podcast session on any ultrasound-related topic, using the Rodecaster podcast room in the GME building in Lima. Requirements: select appropriate topic, with list of general talking points, invite speaker and record a podcast. Coming up with a creative name for the pod is bonus!
(7) Two-week liaison with Mercy QPathE team to enhance operations
Interface with the QPathE and Mercy IT team to enhance the current operation capabilities, maintenance of the ultrasound machines, and overall US workflow in the St Rita’s Emergency Department
